Xmas Shopping – TypographyMaxx

After the hand-in on Wednesday I thought I deserved some retail therapy and hit the shops. The Student budget doesn’t really stretch very far, so it was more window shopping than buying but I was surprised to find some cool items in TKMaxx….

The christmas gift list for Graphic Designers (in pictures)!

Keep Calm and Carry On ‘Fabulous Oatie Flips’? Perfect for dunking in a cup of coffee!

A metal ampersand… Perfect for the Graphic Designer’s garden!

Two of the Five clothbound hardcover editions of the Penguin Classics by Coralie Bickford-Smith; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and Lady Chatterly’s Lover. Perfect for any Graphic Designer’s bookcase.

…and mini notepads – shaped like the letter T for Tasha! Perfect for noting down a Graphic Designer’s all important ideas!

TKMaxx has definitely impressed me this time!

J’adore… Tom Davie

Tom Davie’s Behance is choc-a-bloc with brilliant typographic posters

This is similar to a project I have planned. I was lucky to acquire some old psychology text books (thanks to a tip off that the Psychology department at Uni were getting rid of a lot of old books) and hopefully now that the Christmas holiday is here I will be able to work on it! All will be revealed soon :)

Wow. I love paper art!

Tom Davie is definitely a talented man!

Restricted Zone: At Any Time

After the disaster with the plotter printer, I finally managed to print my magazine spreads and mount them for submission.

Thanks to Sunjay Morar, who took these lovely macro shots of my mounts!

All images, plus more, can be found at my student flickr.

Why do printers hate me so?

Can I be a Graphic Designer if printers hate me?

On Tuesday, after about 2 hours trying to set the document up correctly, I sent an A0 length document (Magazine spread finals belonging to Helen and myself) to the plotter printer (with help from a 3rd year) and this is what happened….

I am half smiling here but in fact, i wanted to cry…  Lesson of the day – don’t use the plotter.

J’adore… Ligature, Loop & Stem

O.k. boys and girls, today’s lesson is Type Anatomy…

Ligature, Loop & Stem, alternatively known as Scott Boms and Luke Dorny (along with some help from Grant Hutchinson) are the creators of a set of truly beautiful typography posters…

Only 100 prints of The Typographic Anatomy Lesson make it annoyingly exclusive (as well as more beautiful and desired!) …

Each individually signed and sealed… ah it’s the small details which always make me happy.

Also their poster of Ampersands made the top 10 of 2010 HOW Poster Design Awards, with good reason:

25 Black versions and ONLY 3 white! These guys are all about exclusivity!

Every Graphic Designer should own one of these posters!

Image credit to FPO (For Print Only) which you should definitely check out because they have an amazing collection of print based work on there :) Very inspirational!
