YCN @ Lincoln 2012

After spending a good 10 weeks on a YCN brief and thinking about submitting my work, it was good timing for  Zoe from YCN to pop in to speak to us Lincoln Graphic Design students.

I went to the YCN talk last year but looking back, I think quite a lot of it went over my head as I was a first year and so wasn’t thinking about the competition briefs. This time I found it to be more beneficial.

She gave an overall background of YCN as well as talking about the briefs and a few pointers on how to submit your work. I worked on the i newspaper brief and have decided to submit – so fingers crossed for me guys! I haven’t posted any work from my campaign due to competition etiquette, but I will reveal all after the competition is out of the way. I was really pleased with how it turned out in the end and was really surprised when I received my grade back: a 1st! Super proud!

Earlier in the year I acquired one of YCN’s previous annuals designed by Inventory Studio:

Zoe talked about how this issue of the annual was too focused on YCN rather than the students and the awards, which was my thoughts when I first read it a couple of months ago.

She explained that YCN realised this and so took it back to being about the students – good move!

Zoe also spoke about YCN’s Opportunity page where internships, jobs and freelance opportunities are posted. I’m going to keep checking it from now on as I’m looking to gain some experience this summer (I’m keen and promise to make lots of tea and coffee, so snap me up design world!).

Filled with excitement, I’m now spending my evening prepping my submission. The deadline is Friday 30th March at 6pm so plenty of time yet, but don’t leave it too late!

I really enjoy guest speakers, so hope that the 3rd years have got some more lined up…
