Ooops – this post seems to have been lost somewhere in my drafts, but definitely deserves some love.
Back in May, Lucy & I were in Shoreditch after work and looking for a bite to eat. Lucy is a coeliac (alleric to gluten) so she searched for somewhere Gluten-free friendly on her Gluugle app and Bill’s was an option. I had heard some great things about Bill’s on the grapevine so we decided to try it out for ourselves.
Starting out as a small family business, Bill’s has a lovely story and over 40 restaurants across the UK. The Hoxton Square restaurant has a rustic feel with exposed bricks, white-washed wood and candelabras…
… and teeny tiny salt and pepper shakers – very cute!
The menu design was minimal but clear with detailed dish descriptions and our waiter was really helpful, circling everything on the menu that Lucy could eat. The font used was a typewriter style, which I assumed was to give it a personal touch – as if Bill had typed it up himself!? There was a cute, handwritten specials list too.
Our bottle of Rose was kept safe in a vintage-looking massive olive tin whilst we tucked into our food:
We both opted for the grilled halloumi and hoummous burger with chips and it was beautiful – the taste and the illustrated paper it was presented on! We was persuaded into sharing a dessert:
The Eton Mess was lovely – and I don’t even like strawberries (Lucy ate most of them!)
I’m not sold on the logotype (it kinda reminds me of comic sans) but the food was amazing, the restaurant had a great atmosphere and service and some quirky illustrative features (like this cutlery on the business card).
Find your nearest Bill’s and try the halloumi and hoummous burger for yourself! Let me know what you think to Bill’s.
