I’ve been working in Southwark for almost 11 months now and have explored and gotten to know the area quite well, so when one evening I saw unfamiliar neon lights on my way to the tube I was intruiged. The next afternoon Soof & I followed the bright lights to see what it was all about:
What we found were a collection of pop-up food stalls within the Union Street arches -aka the Union Yard Winter Market. Between the 15th and 23rd of December only the market will be serving tasty sweet and savoury food and drinks from a variety of quirky vans and stalls.
Vintage buses, cute camper vans with picket fence gardens…
A colleague had recommended Hix’s Fish Dog to Soof and it sounded like an interesting concept so we ordered one each and shared some chips. So what is a Fish Dog? To you and me it’s a fish finger in a hot dog roll with minted mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce, which looks like this:
It tasted amazing! It was really good fish and cooked to perfection, as were the chips – crispy on the outside but light and fluffy on the inside. The bread roll let it down slightly as it split in the middle and so my mushy peas leaked out everywhere – boo! But what can you expect from street food? ha Overall Soof & I gave it an 8/10 (and we’re harsh markers) and would definitely recommend you go and try one.
But if the Fish Dog doesn’t sound like your kettle (kettle of fish, ha! Get it?) you can choose from crepes, burgers and oh, a pizza cooked inside a Land Drover! Pretty cool, no?
So if you find yourself hungry in the Southwark area you should pop down to TASTE Street Food Winter Market Pop Up, UNION YARD, Union Street, SE1 0LR (the nearest tube station is Southwark on the Jubilee line) and get something tasty between 11am and 9pm. But don’t forget that it finishes on the 23rd so you’ve got a couple of days left. Just follow the neon lights…
Let me know if you try any of the food – I’d love to know what you think about the Fish Dog too!
