It’s crazy to think that I am the same age as Photoshop – Happy 25th Birthday! I don’t think that I knew Photoshop existed was until I was probably 15, but I wouldn’t have actually used it properly until I was 18. Now I can’t imagine my life without it – primarily as a Graphic Designer but also as a blogger because it’s not just design folk that use Photoshop now. Anyone can thanks to google and youtube tutorials and it’s even dropped in casually in films: ‘Look at you, it’s like you’ve been photoshopped!’ (10 points if you can tell me which film that is – leave answers in the comments!)
I found this article on It’s Nice That and couldn’t resist sharing it: CreativeLive challenged 8 Photoshop experts try and use Photoshop 1.0. I can’t even work out how many versions of Photoshop there have been in 25 years, I mean what are we on now… CS6? Watch and LOL:
‘Oh My Gosh, there’s nothing in this programme.’
‘Do we have levels back then?’ ‘OH, you can do levels?’
‘Oh there’s no preview in here.’ ‘That can’t be true?’
‘I don’t even know how to undo that many times. Oh you only get undo redo!’
‘Oh my god. Don’t tell me I can only go back 1 space. I can only do 1 undo?!’
‘For some reason I don’t think I’m going to be saving this picture’
‘Lets do some type. I’m gonna press T and no, that doesn’t work’ – No shortcuts
So as well as being a good laugh, this makes me realise how lucky we are now because Photoshop, you have come a LONG way! I can’t imagine producing anything in Photoshop 1.0 – how does it even work? What does it even do? Just yesterday I was talking to our work experience guy at the studio and made a joke about using Paint ( I don’t even think he knew what it was… but who else remembers that?) because I’m a Photoshop snob. But actually, I don’t think that Photoshop 1.0 is any better than Paint!?
Standards are pretty high nowadays – imagine glossy editorial photography being edited using this? It just wouldn’t work.
Graphic Designers all over the world are crying inside right now! Here, take a tissue and the next time your Photoshop crashes remind yourself that it could be worse, it could be version 1.0 🙂
