Planel

This week it’s been all about planning my panel (planel) in preparation for Show Thirteen. I’ve chosen to just show one project (you’ll be able to see the rest of my work in my portfolio next to it!) and it was approved:

Oh look, there’s Barrie arrrsss-ing around!

The tutors have placed everyone now so we can get to work on our panels – some people have painted their panel but I’m keeping mine white as I think my swear words are colourful enough ;) I’ve not got anything to hang just yet as the plotter broke this afternoon (typical!) so I’m just using odd ends of paper at the moment:

Can’t wait to get it all finished. The Private View night isn’t too far away now – eeek!

In other news, I’ve also been working on finishing my Metamorphosis project:

It’s only taken about 3 days to cut, photograph and edit all of these. I’m still waiting for all of the feeling to come back in my fingers from all the scalpel-ing!

Oh, also take a look at the quick video invite I made for Show Thirteen:

I’m looking forward to meeting some new people between 1st and 14th of June – are you coming to see Show Thirteen? Now back to work I go…

Return of the hat…

…-trick. hat-trick‘s Jim Sutherland visited Lincoln as part of the Chitter-Chatter talks series. I remember going to his talk two years ago when I was a 1st year and being really inspired. Ever since then I’ve kept an eye on their work and was really excited to hear that Jim would be doing another talk.

For the full low down, read what I wrote on the Show Thirteen blog.

I briefly talked about their work for the Horniman Museum & Gardens but I need to show you something:

So they cleverly use brackets as a way of linking different collections, create a H and patterns for merchandise. Did anyone notice this:

Does anyone remember my YCN i  newspaper campaign from last year?

I used the bracket as a fun, moustache icon. Seems like the guys at hat-trick and I are on the same wave length… I’m going to take that as a good sign! Maybe I belong at hat-trick?

I asked Jim a question about how to stand out from the crowd of students applying for internships at hat-trick and in return he gave out some ‘prizes’. The choice was either some hat-trick playing cards (which I love) or a box with a book in. I didn’t know what book was in the box but I think that’s why I chose it – I like a bit of mystery. Inside the box was a beautiful 900 page mini book of every hat-trick project – ‘In brief‘:

Ooooh look, there’s the Illuminating Victoria alphabet hoarding project – a bit of a personal fave! So I’m glad I chose the book – tonnes of hat-trick inspiration at my finger tips. It was a brilliant talk and a lovely surprise to see that an idea that I’d produced in 2nd year had also been thought of by experienced designers at hat-trick.

Thanks for the talk and helpful advice Jim – expect something soon, hat-trick!

Triangle Friday #46

Happy Triangle Friday – It’s been a long day!

This week, I’ve got something really relevant to what I’ve been busy with recently. Since January I’ve been part of the Auction 13 team and it’s finally the week of the auction! We’ve got 25 brilliant postcards up for grabs here so go and bid on your favourite now – all of the money raised goes towards my degree show, Show Thirteen.

We asked The Caseroom Press, our tutors Philippa and Barrie, to contribute and today we received their postcard:

I’m really smiley because… it’s a triangle!

Barrie typed it on his typewriter in black and red – it’s lovely.

I will definitely be bidding on this one when it goes up on Auction 13. Have a tri-tastic weekend and get your bids in before 6PM on Sunday here. And as always, get in touch if you find anything triangle related.

Bank Holiday Activities

Since the last crit EVER on Friday afternoon I haven’t stopped! I edited Week #10 of the Show Thirteen videos Friday evening, shot more of my Metamorphosis time lapses on Saturday:

We had a picnic…

… a party complete with Limbo…

… a pillow fight…

… and made human pyramid! We know how to have fun in an empty room :)

Not wanting to waste the balloons, we had a Birthday BBQ on Sunday for Jack’s belated 21st. It was his actual birthday on Wednesday but with the final crits on Thurs and Fri, he kept working!

Auction 13 went live today – so exciting to see that we have 44 bids on 13 of our postcards already:

Check out all of the postcards on ebay and get your bids in soon as it all ends on Sunday 12th May from 6PM.

Today I’ve been making invites for the Private View of Show Thirteen

Thanks to my team of helpers – Dave, Emma, Jake, Jack, Becky A & Becky C.

We produced over 80 invites today – they look pretty good if I do say so myself! :)

It’s been a  lovely sunny weekend so naturally, as a typical English person, I now look like a lobster ha But really excited to get started building Show Thirteen tomorrow!

Show and tell

Today Barrie kindly arranged for two designers to offer their help and advice with a portfolio surgery. I was lucky enough to see both Kath Tudball from Johnson Banks and Alan Herron from Alan Herron Stuff as another student had dropped out.

Both were really chatty, friendly and helpful. It was great to talk through my portfolio and discuss it with experienced designers – it’s given me a bit more confidence about my ideas. I’ve got some things I want to improve, so with Kath and Alan’s advice I’m going to spruce up my portfolio. Studios around the UK watch out – I’ll be coming for you soon!

P.S. thanks to Emma for being my photographer!
