The Print Handbook & Competition

I was browsing Pinterest a few weeks back when I found The Print Handbook. As a design student, formatting work for print is a big task, with a lot to consider. The Print Handbook is a mini guide to everything print – ‘Full of examples, it makes the mistakes so you don’t have to.’ Sounds great to me!

The 2nd edition is printed with 5 colours on silk, gloss and uncoated paper, with a foiled cover in 300gsm Tangerine Keaykolour:

It’s bright, bold and easy to read. It covers colours, processes, line weights…

… binding examples, examples of how paper affects colour and the list goes on! It also has helpful conversion charts – you’ll never need to google them again:

The second edition of The Print Handbook is available for only £5. Bargain!

The Print Handbook also have a resource site with helpful articles and freebies including binding guides!

And there’s still more! They’ve also produced a set of posters using Helvetica, Bodini and Cooper Black. Each poster is printed using silver metallic ink on 250gsm Burgundy Keaykolour uncoated card and made up of 8 A5 cards, which fit together to make an A2 size piece.

And guess what? Andy from The Print Handbook has kindly donated a Helvetica poster for one of you guys to win:

So who wants it? For a chance to win this for your wall, all you have to do is comment below (make sure to leave a way for me to contact you), email me or tweet/retweet:

@natashanuttall The Helvetica Poster will look great on my wall. http://wp.me/pyROx-Mv for more info! RT to enter #graphiquegiveaway

I’ll draw the winner in 2 weeks on Sunday 3rd March at 8PM, so make sure you enter before then – what have you got to lose!?

And don’t forget to check out The Print Handbook – Follow them on twitter, like them on facebook and make sure you check out their website for all of your printing queries!

It’s all in the detail – A14 visit

I’ve been a bit quiet recently (due to competition brief etiquette) but yesterday Emma, Lucy, Amber and I took a trip to Nottingham.

Simon Downer of A14 Print Finishing came to Lincoln a couple of weeks ago to talk to us about print finishes. He also did a really helpful crash course in how to structure an email to a printer so that we would know all the essential details to include  for future print jobs.

I approached him at the end of the talk and he agreed to let a small group of students visit A14, and so we did:

We’d never been to a printers or had any contact with one before and so didn’t really know what to expect… Welcome to where the magic happens:

All the essential paper stock, foils, machinery and tools to create some striking print finishes. Simon gave us a tour of the A14 workshop, starting on the right hand side…

…with the 3 Original Heidelberg machines.

At A14 there’s not a digital printer in sight, and with good reason! They may be old (dating back to 1961 I remember Simon saying) but these Heidelberg machines are the best traditional printing machines to exist and are completely mechanical. This means that, like clockwork, if one part of the machine is out of place the whole process stops.

The machine above can also be used for letterpress, but was in the process of cutting paper during our visit. Multi-fuctional and brilliant!

I don’t know why, but I loved the little counter counting the sheets of paper at the bottom of the machine. I think it’s just those simple things that are now controlled by a computer.

Standing next to the machine, we could feel the air circulating from the machinery pumping away. You can’t get the whole experience, but for all you print geeks, see and hear it in action below:

Next, Simon showed us the foil blocking machine. During our visit, some blood red foiling was taking place. The front/foiled side…

….and on the back you can see the embossed pressure mark. So much nicer than plain surface printing!

A little fun fact for you; 95% of foil in the world is gold and silver, so coloured foil is pretty rare (and expensive I can imagine).

Below, some die cutting is taking place for a business card:

Simon explained that for this particular business card they were die cutting a shape into the grey card so that when they duplexed it with orange card, the shape would show through as orange.

Keeping with business cards, Simon then showed us a new process:

Edge foiling!

It looked so great on this design (white on both sides with an embossed logo on the back) and added a lovely hint of colour.

Simon also showed us the lithography printer and explained the thermography printer too(comparing it to the toaster in a hotel – conveyor belt haha!).

We ventured upstairs where we found some die templates…

… showing the creasing and cutting blades.

Simon kindly let us have a rummage through some boxes of business cards and choose some to take for examples of the different processes. Like the geeks we are, we quite enjoyed looking through and selecting some really nicely finished cards.

My selection:

Seeing all the possibilities got us quite excited and really put us in the mood to get our own business cards printed – Graphic Designers are easily pleased, hey?

Thanks to Simon and everyone at A14 for letting us visit. It was really interesting to see print in action and was a great experience! A14 are really passionate about print and producing something with that little bit extra – you can check out some of their work (even place an order!) here.

Lucky Six

Since August I’ve been pretty lucky either winning or aquiring Graphic Design items (posters, books etc) through twitter and facebook.

I thought it was about time I shared them with you so I photographed them all before the snow came to visit Lincoln (we’ve got a couple of cms now)!

Back in August I won the first issue of Imagine That, a zine showing student work.

I even feature inside… well, one of my tweets:

Included was this cute screen print poster of a typewriter:

In November I won one of only 50 black & gold Kern prints from Pixel One:

At the end of January I retweeted ex-Lincoln Student Sophie Adams‘ tweet competition to win one of her Ghosts books about the abandoned underground stations of London:

And it must have been my lucky week because the day after I was picked as the winner of a breakfast themed poster from Tom Davie of Studio twentysix-2. I did a J’adore post about Tom’s work a while back, so was really excited to be getting a print of his work! It came all the way from America:

Looks good enough to eat – yum!

At Leeds Print Festival I was kindly given 2 posters; a Leeds Print Festival 2012 lilac poster by Aaron Skipper (who was helping to organise it):

(The only photo taken today – Lincoln has snow now!)

and also a Lestaret lino print, which I did show already but I just wanted to show you it’s beauty again:

Amazing!

I’m not usually a lucky person so it just proves that it’s worth keeping an eye out for competitions on social networking because you really could win!

Thanks to Imagine That, Pixel One, Sophie Adams, Tom Davie, Aaron Skipper and Lestaret. I love all of my goodies and am quickly developing a design wall in my room!

The next thing I’m hoping to win is a yellow pencil or a framed YCN A (fingers crossed!) but I guess I could settle for a lovely print in the meantime :)

House Pet

A recent addition to the Graphics household is our house pet, Caslon:

Awww, isn’t he just the cutest? (He does have a hairy bum though!) We named him Caslon because it’s a typeface(of course) and also sounds like Aslan the lion from Narnia.

He’s the perfect pet for Graphic Designers – low maintenance and has creative hair (we’re thinking of cutting it into a mohawk). He gets loads of attention and is great for procrastination! Back to work now though…

Something for January

I’ve been a bit quiet this month, I know, but I am back as loud as ever with something exciting!

So it’s the last day of 2011 and I’m looking forward to 2012 more than ever now. No, not because of the 2012 Olympics haha But this:

Yes, I’m excited for the Leeds Print Festival!  At Leeds Gallery from the 27th to 31st January 2012 and ‘celebrating traditional and contemporary print process through type and image’, the festival will exhibit artist’s and designer’s work from around the world as well as boasting an exciting talks line up! On Sunday 29th: Generation Press

http://vimeo.com/33919348

Si Scott

… and Anthony Burrill (whose work I looked at in my recent print project, Limited Edition)…

…will all be talking and I will be listening – can’t wait! All 3 for just £20 and did I mention a hand printed, personalised ticket – what a bargain! Get yours from here, sooner rather than later!

Aside from all of the great artists and designers attending, a fantastique reason to attend is this man. The reason I started to blog and the main source of my enthusiasm for Graphic Design, my tutor from college will be exhibiting and selling some of his own printed goodies. He’s a Yorkshire man, so pretty friendly and very excitable about all things letterpress!

So if you’re ‘up North’ (as they say) or can make it there, then I guarantee this will be a print-geek convention of good sorts! If you decide to go, let me know…
