WARNING: This post contains swearing! It seems like a long time ago now, but before Christmas I started working on the ISTD Sound Bites brief. After listening to several of the clips, I found swearing was a common theme and an interesting one at that. I’m not really much of a swearer, but I definitely learnt a few words during this project! I packaged my work up on Tuesday and this weekend it is auditioning at...

The University library started a system called ‘More books’ just after christmas where students can request new books that are needed for studying/dissertation. My dissertation looks at women in Graphic Design – the attitudes, successes and problems faced. As a female about to go into the industry, it’s something that is very relevant and I find it really interesting. I found that all of the books on women and design in our library were either...

Thursday evening I travelled to Manchester for the Roses Student Awards 2013. A while back I showed some behind the scenes photos of what Emma & I got up to whilst working on the Pen Pals brief to persuade people to get back into writing and make friends with the world! Dave kindly offered us a place to crash and so the 3 of us set off to Islington Mill to represent Lincoln. As we...

Only the other day I was thinking about how I’ve been really good with blogging this year – 77 posts this academic year already! However now it comes to the busy part of the year and unfortunately the blog posts will probably be few and far apart. I’ve got a to-do list longer than my arm – Dissertation, ISTD, Barrie’s new project, Auction 13, Show Thirteen (check out a new designer of the day, everyday!) and...

When I was at college, my tutor received a poster from one of his ex-students, Toby Burkill. It was an awesome poster; it was an St Brides Design Auction poster! Screen printed in a rainbow of colours, it inspired me when I finally got the opportunity to try my hand at screen printing a year later (which I can’t believe I just linked because that photo of me is horrendous but nevermind)! I hadn’t decided where I...

After the success of the first Chitter-Chatter talk from YCN, another has been announced! Mancunian design studio, RAW, are booked in for Wednesday 20th March at 2PM. Boasting work for Nandos, the BBC, The FA and Liverpool FC to name a few, the RAW talk is one not to be missed! Tickets are only £3 for an insight into what it’s like to work at RAW. I admit, I have admired RAW’s beautiful studio space for...

So I’m working on a new brief now – an open brief (queue dramatic music)!  Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis is an interesting tale where Gregor, a hardworking travelling salesman, wakes up as a giant bug! The story is full of themes and underlying meanings, and we have been tasked with using the text and/or what it symbolises to create something. I get the feeling I’m being watched… …and I’ll explain more soon!

Last night was a big night for Graphics students at Lincoln – our first big night out together. Back when I was a first year, the 3rd years organised a fundraising night out – CMYK. We had such a great time, meeting people from other years and just letting our hair down. It’s been talked about in a few student rep meetings before – how it would be nice for all of the years to...

Yesterday marked the deadline for the Creative Roses Student Awards, so it’s now ok for me to post about it. About a month ago we were given the option to work on either a D&AD or YCN brief as well as undertaking the Creative Roses Pen Pals brief. We were given the option to work in pairs, so my partner in crime Emma & I teamed up. I posted a hint of what we were producing...

Today students gathered for the first talk of the Chitter-Chatter series. Zoë from YCN came to talk to us Lincoln creatives – a great way to start off the series! Zoë began by introducing YCN; explaining what they do and the different ways they help young creatives. Since 2001 YCN have worked with companies to provide live brief opportunities through their Student Awards. This year there are 21 companies who have set briefs, ranging from Ugg...

A couple of weeks ago, some experimental typography started popping up around the studio… SLOP! The 1st years had been working on a brief to visualise onomatopoeic words, producing some great results! TWANG – you can just hear that in your head, right? My favourite one is drip: Brilliant – especially the attention to detail with the puddle on the floor! I can’t credit any of the work as the 1st years are quite shy...

Yesterday I had the final crit of my D&AD project with Zoe. About half way through, Barrie popped in. He said he had been interviewing a prospective student and asked them ‘Why Lincoln?’. They replied ‘Because of Natasha Nuttall’s blog’. I couldn’t believe it! I began writing my blog when I was at college to help be more critical of my own work and engage in the design world. Since then, it has grown into...

I haven’t posted anything work related for 2 weeks now – this is the downside to working on competition briefs! Due to competition etiquette, I can’t really post anything online, but I just wanted to show you that I’m keeping nice and busy. Today I’ve been making things out of paper. I love the work of Yulia Brodskaya and Julien Vallée and have wanted to give it a go myself for a while now. It’s a lot of...

Fundraising is well under way in the Lincoln GD studios at the moment, and now news of my favourite event is here: The talks team (aka Chitter-Chatter: Sam, James and Talveer) have booked YCN to kick off the talks series on Weds 13th Feb. I love the talks series as they offer an opportunity to hear about what it’s really like to be in the industry. The speakers show and explain their work and always have...
