So I’m working on a new brief now – an open brief (queue dramatic music)!  Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis is an interesting tale where Gregor, a hardworking travelling salesman, wakes up as a giant bug! The story is full of themes and underlying meanings, and we have been tasked with using the text and/or what it symbolises to create something. I get the feeling I’m being watched… …and I’ll explain more soon!

Last night was a big night for Graphics students at Lincoln – our first big night out together. Back when I was a first year, the 3rd years organised a fundraising night out – CMYK. We had such a great time, meeting people from other years and just letting our hair down. It’s been talked about in a few student rep meetings before – how it would be nice for all of the years to...

Yesterday marked the deadline for the Creative Roses Student Awards, so it’s now ok for me to post about it. About a month ago we were given the option to work on either a D&AD or YCN brief as well as undertaking the Creative Roses Pen Pals brief. We were given the option to work in pairs, so my partner in crime Emma & I teamed up. I posted a hint of what we were producing...

Today students gathered for the first talk of the Chitter-Chatter series. Zoë from YCN came to talk to us Lincoln creatives – a great way to start off the series! Zoë began by introducing YCN; explaining what they do and the different ways they help young creatives. Since 2001 YCN have worked with companies to provide live brief opportunities through their Student Awards. This year there are 21 companies who have set briefs, ranging from Ugg...

A couple of weeks ago, some experimental typography started popping up around the studio… SLOP! The 1st years had been working on a brief to visualise onomatopoeic words, producing some great results! TWANG – you can just hear that in your head, right? My favourite one is drip: Brilliant – especially the attention to detail with the puddle on the floor! I can’t credit any of the work as the 1st years are quite shy...

I haven’t posted anything work related for 2 weeks now – this is the downside to working on competition briefs! Due to competition etiquette, I can’t really post anything online, but I just wanted to show you that I’m keeping nice and busy. Today I’ve been making things out of paper. I love the work of Yulia Brodskaya and Julien Vallée and have wanted to give it a go myself for a while now. It’s a lot of...

Fundraising is well under way in the Lincoln GD studios at the moment, and now news of my favourite event is here: The talks team (aka Chitter-Chatter: Sam, James and Talveer) have booked YCN to kick off the talks series on Weds 13th Feb. I love the talks series as they offer an opportunity to hear about what it’s really like to be in the industry. The speakers show and explain their work and always have...

Today marked the grand opening of the Lincoln GD 2013 bring & buy stall. Shopkeeper Dave, has arranged a Morag-esque style stall outside the canteen where people can donate unwanted things which others can buy for £1. It’s the first event in a series of fundraising ideas for our end of year show. Above, Tom donates 2 b&w films, 2 colour films and a Starbucks mug. I donated the letter A, a baked beans recipe...

A slightly misleading title I know, but it’s competition time for the Lincoln 3rd year Graphic Designers. Today we were given a selection of competition briefs from the student awards for D&AD (Ted Baker and V&A) and YCN (Forestry Commission England). We are to choose one of the 3, and also work on the RSA Pen pals brief too – lots and lots of work! We are lucky to be joined by Zoë Bather (previously of...

I realised that I’ve blogged about the development but never the actual final magazine, so here goes: Divide is a magazine produced by 6 Graphic Design students from the University of Lincoln: Emma Dawson, Amber Hadley, Tom Matthews, Sunjay Morar, Natasha Nuttall (me) and Lucy Perkins. Divide is a magazine about all areas of modern life – Social culture, the environment, men & women’s fashion, technology, politics and music, with each area having it’s own...

So it’s onto the next project – ISTD with Barrie & Philippa. For our introductory lesson yesterday, we were asked to bring A2 layout pads, scalpels and glue – intruiging. It turned out that we were going to be making really quick, circus themed posters using letters of a variety of sizes. This isn’t random – one of the ISTD briefs is called Circus: Emma works on her zombie clowns poster… … whilst the rest...

Earlier we had the last crit before the deadline on Thursday. After our 12 hour library stint, we were feeling quite prepared and wanted to impress Marianne, an ex-Lincolner who now works at Esterson Associates. After the crit with Steve last week, we changed quite a bit to make sure that everything was really consistent. Marianne was really helpful and gave us a few Indesign tips too. The feedback was very positive overall and the only...

I’m a bit behind schedule (I went to London – more about that soon), but on Thursday we were lucky enough to have ex-Lincolner Steve Fenn visit and crit work for our group magazine project. Our tutor, Glen, and Steve looked through our magazine spreads as we explained our ethos, articles and design choices. Steve had worked at Studio8 before they split, but now has his own studio with other ex- Lincolner, Tom Pollard –...

Just thought I would do a quick post about why I’ve been at Uni on a Saturday. Emma & I have been helping out with the University of Lincoln open days for a couple of weeks now. We both love to talk and we both love our course, so I guess we are the perfect pair to talk to all of the fresh faces that could be the next generation of Lincoln Graphic Design students....
