Better luck next time

So, bad news guys. Looks like you’re stuck with me in England because I won’t be going to Canada – I didn’t make it through to the ADAA 2012 finals.
But I’m not sad – I made it to the semi finals out of 5000 entries and I think that’s a pretty good achievement, especially as I wasn’t expecting to get anywhere!

It was exciting but a bit complicated sending my work off. I had several trips to the post office and numerous ridiculous quotes from some quite rude post ladies. The problem was that I needed to send my A1 poster in a tube but also some paper work and a CD in a bubble packet. When I packaged it up it looked like the shape of a guitar and I didn’t think that would be a problem – you can send any shape parcel right? Wrong. The post office have some guidelines which meant that I couldn’t send it as a large package (because it was too long) or as a tube (because it wasn’t round enough). It didn’t weigh a lot at all but because it was A1 width it was awkward – one quote I received was £48! But in the end it made it to America – if only I could have gone with it..

Oh look, there I am  amongst some of the other semi finalists with my cup of coffee – a proper designer pose! But just like a 90s game show, I’m not going away emptied handed:

I have a certificate and a smile!

So congratulations to all of the finalists and better luck next time to everyone else. I’ll definitely be entering again next year and you guys should too – it’s free so you’ve got nothing to lose!

Adobe Design Achievement Awards 2012

I received an unexpected email on Monday evening…

…from the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.

Last month I made a last minute decision to submit 2 pieces of work about 2 hours before the deadline. I hadn’t planned on entering because it’s an international competition and I didn’t think I really stood a chance against the Adobe suite masters of the world. But then I thought: ‘It’s free, so what have I got to lose?’. It turns out that my Confessions of a Blog-a-holic data visualisation was put through to the next stage! The answer to my question? Nothing to lose!

There are 3 other Lincolner’s (that I know of) in the semi-finals too: Sunjay, Ruth and Caroline. Congrats guys – we’re putting Lincoln on the map!

So fingers crossed, I’m sending it off to California… if I can get it printed for a reasonable price that is. At Uni it’s £3 for an A2 print, but I’ve looked at prices for printers locally (I’m home for the summer) and they are £15 and upwards – ridiculous! It would actually be cheaper for me to travel back to Lincoln to print it off myself, so I might end up doing that.

Wish me luck!
