The Beauty of Books – Final Cover

It feels a long time since my first post about this project which I am going to say is because I was spending time on the project rather than blogging about it. This is a good thing as I usually procrastinate by blogging rather than doing work but I have learnt to force myself to get into work even when I don’t feel like it, not that it was needed for this project so much. I really enjoyed this project!

My approach to the series design was to keep it simple and constrained. I worshipped the grid system, trying to align everything perfectly.

I did struggle to choose a colour theme. I tried different colours for different symbolisms: light pink(female), magenta(passion), lilac(suffragettes and feminism), red(anger) but went with red in the end because I thought the girly colours were not representative of the tone of the book. My choice of a typographic approach with a symbol incorporated would be able to be transferred to other utopian titles to form ‘The Utopian Series’. I chose Futura as the typeface because it is pointy and sharp like the novel’s tone and its O is a circle which helped the female gender symbol to be slotted within the text… and because it’s modern, angular and I just like it. :)

By rotating the title, the design is referring to being on the ‘edge’ and adding a dynamic feel, different from the usual, horizontal text.

I tried to keep my cover minimalist, clean and tidy with a lot of space. Some might say it’s a boring cover for a book with a lot of graphic imagery but I wanted to create something clever rather than busy, and hope that the design is understood as that.

For the inside pages (I realise you can’t see the outline of the pages, so you will have to use your imagination, sorry!) I continued with simplistic approach…

… with small details continued – the female gender symbol in the chapter title (which would only feature in the chapters that have a O in of course!).

What do you think?

Before                                                               After

Which do you prefer? I had some positive feedback from classmates, but haven’t had my mark back yet so hoping for the best :)
I have to wait at least 2 weeks until I will get my official mark so plenty of time for any opinions from you!

J’adore… Jonathan Safran Foer

Before you look at the book, just watch this video of people’s reactions first!

Watched it? Now scroll down… :)

I’m a bit book mad at the moment (Thanks to a new project – more on that later!), but Tree of codes is no ordinary book! In fact it was described by many printers as “the book you want to make just cannot be made”!

It was originally  The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz, but Jonathan decided to use his favourite book and cut a new story out of it…

It took a year of writing, cutting & prototyping! It’s genius AND a beauty!

Buy yours here…. I’m tempted! :)

The Beauty of Books

A new project – I’m on the last two projects of my first year at Uni! Where did the time go? Eeeek!

This project is right up my street – books & graphic design! We were assigned a book and group to work with 2 weeks ago. As a group we had to read, analyse and de-code the book. My group was given ‘Woman on the edge of time’ by Marge Piercy; 400 pages of confusion, mistreatment and feminism.

It’s main character, Connie, has had a hard life as a Mexican-American woman and is admitted to a mental institution (wrongly) for the 2nd time. She is treated poorly, but manages to slip in and out of her dream world Utopia set in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, USA in the future – year 2137! I think the book has quite an angry, powerful tone with the main issue being equality for all – gender, race & class.

I am going to design a cover and some of the inside pages! Here are some existing covers:

Not the most inspiring covers ever, which I’m happy about – means I can improve it! And also it surprises me because that was how I perceived the meaning of the book – to inspire…. who knows?

We did our group presentation yesterday and I was feeling so ill and nervous, but it went quite well and we cheekily, somehow managed to blag a 2:1 so I’m really pleased with that! We went with an illustrative/symbol led presentation style due to tips from Sinclair – give people something to remember! Images work, but people won’t remember text! Here are my slides on the style of narrative:

I did some book cover design before at college and found it quite interesting and it definitely helped me loosen my creative skills. I’m looking forward to this project and hopefully I will make a good job of it! I’m planning on doing a lot of experimentation because I think this is something I usually skip.

We are allowed to take a photographic, illustrative or typographic approach…. the possibilities should be endless right? I love the penguin book series’ so I will be studying them for inspiration and it was recommended to browse Waterstones to see what catches the eye.

I love looking at books! Don’t wanna speak too soon, but….I think I love this project :) I’ll let you know!

J’adore… Maria Fischer

Maria Fisher’s ‘Traumgedanken‘ project proves that books can be beautiful (well, I thought so anyway)…

Mmmmm :) Great little detail here – a lovely balance of black & white complimented by pastel coloured threads!

Traumgedanken means ‘thoughts on dreams’ in German (if you’re wondering) and I think it’s beautiful!

Take A Looky At My Booky(s)

So yesterday afternoon I continued on adding to my series of books (which I still haven’t named yet! – I must get around to this soon!)

Last week I did not take pictures of anything but I can tell you that I decided to have a go at making a hardcase japanese stab bound book so I was making my hard covers!

Yesterday they were nice and dry and ready to be bound, so I pierced my holes and got on with the sewing. It’s quite an easy process but it’s hard to pull through the holes, I snapped my thread a couple of times! And Voila:

My first Japanese stab bound book! (name to be decided)

This isn’t actually my stictching though, Mr Skinner re-stitched it for me after I did it all on my own but forgot to do something which meant it wouldn’t be tied off properly… but I did stitch this one, top right hand:

A soft cover japanese stab bound book which I had started in the last post!

Here is my series so far:

And now Mr Skinner has managed to fit Bookmaking into our assessment criteria so we have been set a proper project! This is to create a book with content and using some non-bookmaking materials. So basically something unusual and interesting. I am still undecided on what to do for this, but I need to get a move on really seeing as the deadline is our last day before christmas, so the 18th!
