J’adore… Laura Berglund

The bad news is that now I’m a student my shopping trolley doesn’t contain a lot of beautiful packaging examples, in fact probably none at all! The good news is that I can get my beautiful packaging fix thanks to Laura Berglund

I think her packaging for Reve is B-E-A-utiful and it has an unusual story behind it too…

The Reve brand is in fact not about food, but a Hot Air Balloon company. Laura’s packaging is created for the gourmet picnic, including champagne, intended to be eaten after the ride.

The brand is sophisticated, light-hearted, fun and quirky; including some great details such as using a hot air balloon shape for the drinks labels. I think it’s a nice touch that the bottles have to be ‘upside down’ to be able to read the label. This way, the hot air balloon looks like it is airborne – lovely.

‘Enjoy’ – I love all these small extra details – just shows she really got into the project and injected some love! Good to see a clean hand model too haha

The brand stationery is consistent with the packaging; fresh colours and classy patterns. The brown envelopes help to keep it from being too garish though. I am finding that brown parcel paper has become ironically quite luxurious. Interesting!

I don’t know what it is about this leaflet design but I just love it! It feels so organic and good, yet not in a cliché way.

Corporate Identity – Nuttall & Cowell Domestic Removals – Final Outcomes

Voila! Here are the final pieces of my Corporate Identity project (I handed in on Monday)…

My logo (you will have already seen this):

I then applied my logo to stationary:

My Letterhead:

I chose to use my logo on the top right and left align my address to the arrow point. I used this alignment to create a larger right hand margin (look below to see the guideline)

Next… what does a letter travel in? An envelope!?

No, a cardboard texture envelope!

I used the texture of a corrugated cardboard box (which would be used to store people’s posessions in for moving house) as the background instead of having a boring white or brown envelope. I wanted it to stand out from the rest of the mail! This is the reason that I used a side opening envelope – to stand out!!

I positioned an edited version of my logo onto the right hand side of the envelope so it overlapped onto the flap to create interest.

For the security pattern on the inside of the envelope I used a box pattern

I used a similar format to my letterhead (to keep everything matching and build a stronger identity) by using my business address aligned to the right of the arrow point. I also used the margin to align the ‘With compliments’ on the compliments slip and for the name information on the business card. I used the brown from the logo to highlight ‘With compliments’ (and italic) and ‘Nuttall’ in the business card’s name.

I kept the Compliments slip and business card plain white (nice and clean) but for the business card I used the corrugated cardboard texture on the back, making it double sided.

The extras!
The brief stated that aswell as the logo and stationary, we must produce 2 other applications. I thought about pens, mugs, uniforms etc but decided that a lorry and box would be the best (and most logical) items to choose!

With my lorry I took the edited version of my logo from the envelope and used it in the corners. I don’t really know why… just tried it and liked it! hah Once again I used the corrugated cardboard texture, so the lorry looks like a massive travelling cardboard box!

and finally, the box!
Used to transport everything from one hosue to your new home! I tried to keep it quite simple, but make sure that it was still obvious so used the logo, with contact details and the edited logo for ‘decoration’. I also used this logo on the inside of the box for a nice little detail. And the all important safety logos… this way up!

I didn’t really enjoy this project until about 3/4 way through… but I think I’m fairly happy with how everything turned out considering my lack of excitement!

Busy Busy Busy

It has been nearly a MONTH since I last posted!! It feels like forever!

I have been so so so busy… all the projects at college are coming to a close now, so that we can concentrate on FMP (Final Major Project!!!!!!)… so it is busy busy busy.

I could probably have found time to blog (loss of sleep doesn’t affect me that much anymore!), however I couldn’t. Literally couldn’t. I think I have metnioned it before… my internet goes dodgy every once in a while and my blog comes up dodgy and it won’t let me post or anything. It’s been like it for about 2 weeks now!

I have 5 draft posts waiting for me to finish them… but it won’t get done this weekend because Corporate Identity (which I have really been wanting to express a new opinion on – I don’t hate it anymore… I actually really enjoy it! Just typical that now it’s over haha) is due in Monday so I will be fine tuning that! Oh and also my boyfriend is back for the weekend…. I am yet to explain this!

But I just came online before I go to work for the evening, and I had almost given up on the idea of my blog working but VOILA! Here I am… posting! So I just wanted to explain my absence… and I just wanted to post because I have missed doing it

Oh…. 1 last thing before I go – I got into Lincoln University (My first choice)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woooooo!!!!! All I have to do is finish my current course – which I going to do deffinitely and then I am off to Lincoln in September – how exciting!!! I will post about this in more depth later…

Anyway, I need to get ready for work now… knowing my luck when I come home my blog won’t be working again haha

Corporate Identity: Nuttall & Cowell Domestic Removals

As a Graphic Designer, Corporate Identity is going to be a large part of my career (assuming that everything goes well anyway haha)… but to be honest (maybe I’m a little TOO honest, if that’s possible?) it doesn’t really excite me at all. Not at the moment anyway. I know that not every project will be really exciting and I won’t love everything I am paid to do… but I just really am not excited by this yet. Hopefully it will change once I get my teeth stuck in a bit more…

Anyway, due to the mass of work I’ve had on recently I haven’t posted any development posts (you might not have even known about this project unless you have been reading Danielle’s blog?), so it falls down to this Tuesday of February half term for me to update everything and try and get my brain a bit more excited.

So the first week we picked our names and businesses from a hat and Nuttall(my surname) & Cowell(of Danielle Cowell, not Simon!) the domestic removals company was born.

I spent the next 2 weeks sketching ideas, looking at existing companies (their logos, colours, presentation) and took part in some class critiques to reach decisions.

After sketches and ideas had been developed I moved onto screen and into Illustrator.

Initial ideas:

After playing around with different ideas I developed 3 final proposals to take to my client (Mr Skinner)

Number 1:

Client feedback: likes the ampersand style and positioning, aswell as the house silhouette created with the arrows
Designer feedback: I don’t like the ampersand! haha

Number 2:

Client feedback: the white cross looks too religious (Christian)

Number 3:

For Number 3 I actually just presented the bottom option, but after my ‘client meeting’ developed it a tiny bit further to the arrow on the top instead of a plain square.

Above is the final version of my logo.

I then started looking into ways that my logo can be used. By this, I mean thinking about how it will appear on letter heads and vans - changing the colours to make it appropriate.
I like the brown… what are other’s opinions?

As part of this work, I needed to look at how my logo could be used in black and white for best effect. I experimented with black and white outlines in different strokes etc

I found that using a thicker stroke for the outline of the ampersand and arrows worked well and allowed my logo to be clear down to a small size

This is it so far… I print screened everything on Illustrator before finishing college for half term and hoped I had got the full process; I think I did pretty well!

Keep watching for more on this project as the next stages will be applying my logo to items (lorrys, uniforms etc) to create the whole feel for my company, Nuttall & Cowell.
