My Type of Decor – DIY 3D Letters

I’ve had this post drafted since May but today I can finally share it with the world!

The reason it’s been under wraps is because I had planned to make 3D letters as housewarming presents for my housemates but obviously I didn’t want to spoil the surprise so I’ve kept it hush hush. Yesterday was the first day that all housemates were together in our new house (and also Danielle‘s birthday – Happy Birthday!) so I was able to finally give them!

I made 5 letters; b for Bobbins, h for Helen, a for Amy, d for Danielle and n for Natasha(because I like ns better than ts)

They are all lowercase Helvetica(controversial?) letters made from cardboard, masking tape, paper mache and wallpaper. It took me 3 days to make all 5 and I burnt my finger with my glue gun quite badly so I don’t have a fingerprint on that finger atm haha But I like to think it was worth it…?

Here’s a few pictures I took to document the process…

I printed out letters in the size I wanted them and then drew round the templates onto corrugated cardboard. I then cut out two of each letter…

To make the letter 3D I placed some card in between the two corrugated card cut outs…

… and then covered them in masking tape to make it more of a solid shape.

Next up was getting messy with the paper mache mix – 1 cup of flour, 1 tablespoon of salt and water. Add some newspaper strips and it was a sloppy mess!

After they were all dried and a lot more solid I set about covering them in wallpaper which I got samples of from B&Q haha…

I burnt my finger when making Amy’s a! :(

And finally the finished letters:

It was good fun and these are something that you can’t buy anywhere else (mainly because they aren’t perfect – not consistent widths and some lean to different sides haha) so they’re all one of a kind!

The guys seem happy with their letters and now I have another n to add to my collection…

What do you think – Impressed? Inspired to have a go at making your own?

J’adore… Bela Borsodi

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!: I am NOT going to pay for any eye tests so read this post at your own risk!

Bela Borsodi’s Alphabet typographs (typography photographs) are so eye boggling, wouldn’t you agree?

What I love about this work is that it’s a bit like what I would imagine its like being on drugs! I, of course, haven’t been stupid enough to do drugs so cannot be sure BUT what I mean by this is that you can look at the pictures and your eyes go funny and start zooming in and out. Of course the photo subjects are 3D but this is not how the letterforms are presented – they are 2D! So I find my eyes going crazy when I am looking at certain details especially on the letters A, L, H and T. If you go here to to Bela’s website (click on editorial I and then WAD #39 – Alphabets) you can see the letters a bit closer up so in more detail. Now, you tell me your eyes aren’t going crazy too!? It’s great isn’t it? :)

I found his work while browsing random bits and bobs - you might know how it is? You look at one thing, which leads to you finding something else and then you end up about a million clicks away from where you started 6 hours ago! It happens to me all the time, which is a good thing btw because I find great stuff like Bela’s work! Anyway, I first came across his stuff here and you should check out the other great finds on there!

P.s. I already said I wouldn’t pay for any eye tests :)

J’adore… Marion Bataille

I know my blogging performance has become shockingly non existant this month, but as always I have the perfect excuse/person to blame; the male species :) (note the smile)
Yes, it would appear I am under the spell of a gentleman… so blogging has taken a back seat for a little while!

HOWEVER there is no doubt that my passion for all things Graphique is still very strong, only the other day I found myself drooling over a book. But this was no ordinary book! Found here, it’s a youtube video of an alphabet pop up book by Marion Bataille

How actually amazing is that?
Of course it is the genius produce of a French lady, as this simple equation will explain:
Female + Parisian culture = WINNER

It went into publication in October 2008 so its like a classic now, nearly a years anniversary and all! If anyone wants to celebrate the years anniversary of it’s publishing then feel free to buy me it  :)

What A Vine Typeface You’ve Got There!

Although I’m posting it today, this is actually from 2 weeks ago.

In my garden the conifer trees are being leeched onto by a vine-type plant. My parents hate it so naturally, I love it. So much that I decided I wanted to create a typeface from it, so I did. I used some paving slabs from my garden as the backdrop. This is the 3rd typeface I have created (mince meat being the first and ice lolly being the second), and all 3 have been more experimental than functional!

I don’t really like how it turned out, that’s why I’ve been reluctant to post it but thought that I can only learn from it. I only just realised that I disliked it so much I deleted all of the close up pictures of the individual letters – oops! So all that is left of that evening is this…

They are all lowercase letters but lets be honest, if I hadn’t arranged them in order then you might not have been able to guess all the letters correctly. Some might say this is the beauty of it, and others might not. The idea and creative intentions were there anyway… :)
