J’adore… Olly Moss

Olly Moss is a young British creative who generated a lot of attention back in May with his first solo exhibition, Paper Cuts, at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles.

I first came across Olly’s work on T-shirt website, Threadless, with his humorous twist on the popular British design classic ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’

He has had many t-shirt designs printed, but I think Olly’s real talent is for poster design. In 2010 he designed Star Wars Triology posters for art house Mondo. They were available from Mondo’s website but they, of course, have sold out and Olly doesn’t plan on doing a second edition, as he says here on his blog. We might not be able to get our hands on one, but luckily for us we can view them via the internet!

What a great set of posters! Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, there’s no denying that Olly’s simple silhouette vector style is striking and has a strong impact. This can also be said for other posters by Olly…

All of these posters are so simple and iconic of the film being portrayed.

I love the textures used to take these designs away from being flat blocks of colour!

Olly uses really powerful colours with his silhouette style to create iconic imagery. It’s a bit like Saul Bass reincarnated? Haha

He is really good at seeing shapes, demonstrated in his development process for his Dirty Harry poster and also with his on going project Alphabattles…

… spot the letters? :) Another example of his cleverness is this:

Great work from Olly and I’m sure there is plenty more to come!

Minister of Disguise

As an update from the previous post ‘Lizards are politicians?’… I have finished the poster!

I don’t like it, but here it is:

Quite different to what I showed you in the previous post!

I wanted to make the tie more tie shaped, so I lengthened it and changed the shape of the collar too using a photo I took for my 365 (Corrr, back in the day! At least its coming in handy)

I hand cut loads of triangles to form the letters and give a lizard skin feel…

This took FOREVER and I’m disappointed because it doesn’t even look that good! :( I have damaged my fingers… can’t feel the tips of 2 fingers and my thumb! So that is not good… :(

I got the idea from seeing these amazing ‘Papercut portraits’ by Kyle Letendre

I used black and green paint and a sponge to create a background and layered it underneath the poster. I used a clip on badge to give it a unique/quirky/3D/interactive effect and finish it off.

Overall, not amazingly proud or happy and so pretty nervous about tomorrow’s review with Brain! Eeeeek! :(

Art & Design Department Exhibition Evening

Thursday 17th June at 7.15pm the College of West Anglia 2010 Art & Design exhibition was declared open!

This week has been so hectic.

I’ve been painting the exhibition space…

… I’ve been panicking about filling my exhibition boards….

…. and I’ve been happy to pose infront of the finished work at the exhibition night!

This week has been tiring and a lot of hard work, but has been rewarding, and not only because I got to see all the hard work put to good effect at the exhibition. This week I have won 2 awards – Graphics Student of the Year 2010 (already blogged about here) and also I won another award at the exhibition open evening for Contribution to Student Community!! (well I think that was what it was called anyway) so basically for being helpful and friendly to everyone- what can I say? I try :) This was voted for by all of the tutors in the Art & Design department, so a real honour for me to be chosen as the winner. As a prize/punishment I got to go up on stage and collect a MASSIVE bouquet of flowers… it is nearly as big as me and has taken up 3 of my mums vases, aswell as a voucher for WHSmiths which I’m going to spend on a Graphic Design book! So thankyou to all of the tutors :)

The exhibition was actually pretty busy, and I stood and watched a few people discuss my work… couldn’t get close enough to hear comments but they weren’t scrunching their noses up so I think that’s a good sign? I also got the chance to have a look at all of the other exhibition spaces and everyone exhibited some really nice work so well done!

I also happened to notice that in the corridor some of our Movie posters were on display!

So that was a nice surprise!

Overall the exhibition night was a great experience, topped off with a drinking session at Stuart House Hotel where we had a giggle with our slightly drunken tutors… who were ‘only being silly’! There were some SO funny/weird/perverted conversations going on and some great quotes which I will remember for a while to come :)

I’m really going to miss the college… I haven’t left yet; results are next friday, but I only have to go in Tuesday to look after the exhibition otherwise.

If you didn’t get a chance to come have a look around the exhibition open evening then do not fear as it is open during the week:

10am – 4pm  Mon -Fri
10am – 1pm Sat
Closed Sun

Pop along! :)

I know I still haven’t posted my FMP, so as I am now going to be bored because I have no work to do I will be able to get around to doing that this weekend! Yay!

‘Saturday night at the movies…

…..Who cares what picture you see?
When you’re hugging with your baby in last row in the balcony.’

Yes, I know it’s Thursday… but who remembers that song? Because I do… and I don’t know why? Reminds me of Primary School…? :S Don’t know lol

Anyway… I’ve had this post drafted since the 10th of February, and yet here I am the 25th of March lol

This project was handed in….. like 2 weeks ago? Nevermind! I’ve been busy!

The task was to take 2 movie posters: 1 from before 1950s and 1 from  after 1999 and swap them over… I chose to  ’Up In The Air ‘(2010) and  ’The Shop Around The Corner’(1940)… So I had to do Up In The Air as if it was from 1940 and The Shop Around The Corner as if it was from 2010! Yeah I know… Gets a bit confusing!!

Up In The Air

First, I had to find some decent size images to work with from the film….

Next, I started working on the type. I used the existing letters and then made the rest I needed from those I already had (if you get me?)

I think I did alright…?

Then I had a look at the title…

And then I played around with the layout…

I saw this promo vector version of the advert and decided it would be cool to add an aeroplane silhouette to my poster…

.. getting there…

Next, I took this picture and painted the background using a brown watercolour paint…

Then I applied it using the layer blending options…

And hey presto!

It’s o.k but I feel like it’s too simple?

Do you agree?

The Shop Around The Corner

The idea was to create a situation in which I could edit the film title into…. so after looking at some images of flower shops (which is the scene of the story) I decided to use the window/ door as the main image and edit the title onto the glass… like opening times in the picture below:

However, that was going to be REALLY hard! So I opted for a slightly more realistic idea – a sign!

I looked at some open/closed signs to get a feel for the style and used this one as a basis:

Ta-dah! But it didn’t feel quite right… so I turned it green and made it into a proper sign using some card and string:

I popped into the local flower shop (which coincidentally happens to be on a corner! hah) and asked to borrow their window display to take a picture… and luckily they said yes! :) They were really lovely and helpful… buy flowers from them here!

I took LOADS of photos… like 100 haha Trying out different angles, and trying to not get people walking into the reflection etc

I got a few weird looks – this shop is on the main road of Kings Lynn so there was plenty of traffic going by! Nevermind!

Anyway I got some good shots and due to the sun being out (rare in February, right!?) I got some really nice reflections which help to make it look more real – well it IS real but you know what I mean?

Then I decided that I would need to have a go at putting some text on the glass anyway… and had a bit of a play aroudn with some different fonts etc…

and in true Blue Peter style… here’s one I made earlier:

What do you think, could it pass as a real modern movie poster?

Which poster do you like more – Up In The Air or The Shop Around The Corner?

Oh and I might aswell ask, do you prefer the original poster or my version? hah

I prefer my modern poster (The Shop Around The Corner) out of the two I have done… what do you think?

Comments!??? :)
