What’s in the window? #4

What’s in the window? Me! Well I’m not anymore, but I was in the window today creating a display for the auction.
The Auction 13 team have been given permission to use TPH’s window to display our lovely postcards, so we set to work:

We’ve displayed the postcards that we’ve received so far on a bookcase. To create some suspense and excitement, we’ve  created a guessing game by placing tags with a numbers. Get involved  on twitter by guessing which numbered postcard was created by who – it’s a bit of fun!

The boys worked hard on our blackboard:

There’s a date for the auction now, with bidding opening 6th May and ending from 6PM Sunday 12th May – plenty of time to get your bids in!

What do you think to our window? We’ve had some great comments already but we’d love to hear from you – tweet us!

If you’re around Lincoln, pop down to Thomas Parker House and take a look at the postcards in detail. But if you’re elsewhere in the world don’t worry, we’ll have close up images of all of our lovely postcards very soon.

Watch our video to see how it all came together:

We are so grateful to all the creatives involved – thank you! Keep an eye on twitter as we’ll start to turn over the tags to reveal the creative behind the postcard.  In the meantime, get involved in the guessing game on twitter and help to spread the word – we’d really appreciate it!

I’ve got my eye on a couple of postcards, so will be keeping my fingers crossed, but will just be happy to raise money for Show Thirteen and brighten people’s days with some lovely postcards.

Women in Graphic Design

The University library started a system called ‘More books’ just after christmas where students can request new books that are needed for studying/dissertation. My dissertation looks at women in Graphic Design – the attitudes, successes and problems faced. As a female about to go into the industry, it’s something that is very relevant and I find it really interesting. I found that all of the books on women and design in our library were either about feminist art or celebrating the female form – not really what I wanted! So I put in a request for 2 books more specifically about women in Graphic Design. A couple of weeks later my housemate Amy said she’d seen something in the new books section which reminded her of me:

One of my books had arrived!

Women in Graphic Design 1890 – 2012 by Gerda Breuer and Julia Meer is a great study of the development of women’s roles in Graphic Design. Although half of it is written in German, it contains some insightful interviews and case studies of female graphic designers around the world (in English – yay!).

From Irma Bloom…

… to Paula Scher, this book is the perfect resource for my dissertation! It even includes sections from other books by female designers like The boat by Paula Scher:

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s an A-Z of female designers at the back:

From April Greiman to Jessica Hische – old and modern female designers are featured side by side giving a great overview of history on the topic.

Unfortunately 3 other people have requested the book so I have to return it, but I’ve definitely learnt a lot from it. Thanks University of Lincoln library!

Auction 13

When I was at college, my tutor received a poster from one of his ex-students, Toby Burkill. It was an awesome poster; it was an St Brides Design Auction poster! Screen printed in a rainbow of colours, it inspired me when I finally got the opportunity to try my hand at screen printing a year later (which I can’t believe I just linked because that photo of me is horrendous but nevermind)! I hadn’t decided where I wanted to go to University at this point, but it’s weird to look back at that moment now. After researching a few different Graphic Design courses, I found that the awesome St Bride’s poster was produced by a group of Lincoln students. I went to the open day, fell in love and the rest is history!

It’s a weird, but great feeling to now be planning our own Design Auction as Lincoln students. Obviously, we can only dream of the success that the St Bride Design Auction achieved but we are up for the challenge of continuing the Lincoln auction tradition – it was Lincoln that started off the design auction idea back in 2007 after all!

The first auction was held in TPH back in April 2008 and the second at St Brides Library, London in March 2009. Both were hugely successful and raised A LOT of money for the end of year shows. For more info about those, check here.

2013 is the year of Auction 13. It’s the last year at Thomas Parker House, so how else to end the tradition, than with an idea that was born there!?

Auction 13 is a postcard auction where we are asking designers, illustrators, typographers, photographers and creatives of all disciplines to get involved.

What happens? We send them a postcard, they doodle/ sketch / stick something on it and send it back to us and we admire it and share it with the world. We’re planning an online auction so people from all over the world can have a chance to bid on a unique piece of design.

We’re excited about it – are you?

We’ve started to send emails out already and it’s a brilliant feeling receiving replies – so many nice people out there that are willing to help us!

In the meantime, please support us and follow our progress through twitter and our blog.

Chitter-Chatter presents: YCN

Today students gathered for the first talk of the Chitter-Chatter series. Zoë from YCN came to talk to us Lincoln creatives – a great way to start off the series!

Zoë began by introducing YCN; explaining what they do and the different ways they help young creatives.

Since 2001 YCN have worked with companies to provide live brief opportunities through their Student Awards. This year there are 21 companies who have set briefs, ranging from Ugg and Lego to Yahoo.

Earlier on in the year, the 2nd years worked on the Plan UK brief and some 3rd years have worked on the Forestry Commission brief recently, but it was interesting to hear about the other briefs. Zoë told us about the moment that the Lego brief came through – everyone in the studio high-fived!

Zoë also spoke about what happens if you’re successful with the briefs – the YCN awards ceremony, which has a different quirky theme every year. Lincoln has a great track record at the YCN awards and the year just passed (2011/2012), Lincoln’s Hannah Cobbe was named as YCN Student of the year!

Not only is it a fun evening, but could also lead to your work being created by the brand like Laura Bittles from Falmouth. She worked with YCN’s in house studio to produce her i newspaper campaign for commercial usage:

Annotation and layout were highlighted as important factors to think about when submitting your work and Zoë also advised to ‘make sure your idea is clear because you won’t be there to explain it.’

YCN’s in house studio has been established for 4 years now, with 7 designers on the team. They work on a variety of projects, from publications…

…to viral christmas ads for Arsenal!

All this happens above the gallery, shop and library at the YCN headquarters in London. I’ve been before and it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area – 72 Rivington Street.

YCN have been hosting a range of events and workshops in their shop – ‘Summer of learning’ and ‘School at YCN’ to name a few. In collaboration with Shoreditch house, YCN have also put on the ‘You can now…’ series, with talks about publishing a magazine and working in music so far.

Luckily for us, YCN like to keep busy! Accompanying Zoë, were 2 representatives from Experian who came to talk to us about the brief they’ve set. They began with questions and facts about credit scores which I thought was a great introduction to the brief – the designer toys went down well as an incentive to get people involved too!

Experian are looking for an animation to engage with a new target audience – young adults in their 20s. They showed examples of past ‘bad’ adverts:

and ‘good’ adverts to help set students on the right path for the brief.

Thanks to Zoë and the guys from Experian for coming to see us at Lincoln. After the talk, we emerged from the lecture theatre to find it a blanket of snow:

It was a great turn out for the first talk – I spotted a lot of 1st & 2nd years which is brilliant news! Hopefully everyone enjoyed today and is looking forward to the rest of the series.

Remember, the next confirmed talk is from Manchester based studio, RAW on Wed 20th March. Tickets will be available soon for just £3 from the Chitter-chatter team – Sam, Talveer and James. I look forward to it!

Chitter-Chatter presents…

Fundraising is well under way in the Lincoln GD studios at the moment, and now news of my favourite event is here:

The talks team (aka Chitter-Chatter: Sam, James and Talveer) have booked YCN to kick off the talks series on Weds 13th Feb. I love the talks series as they offer an opportunity to hear about what it’s really like to be in the industry. The speakers show and explain their work and always have great anecdotes which you wouldn’t find in a book.

The 2nd years worked on a YCN student awards brief earlier this year and some 3rd years are currently undertaking the Forestry commission brief, so it’s a great time for YCN to visit.

YCN (Young Creatives Network) work with creatives to inspire, educate and provide opportunities. I visited their gallery/’shop’ in London a year ago, as at the time I was undertaking the i newspaper brief, and it was pretty cool. They also have an multi-disciplinary studio above the shop – busy, busy people!

The student awards briefs feature some big brand names – Bacardi, Lego, Ugg and Yahoo to name a few. It’s set to be a great talk, so hopefully the Cargill lecture theatre will be full. This first talk is free too – bargain!

Keep up to date with all the talks news on twitter – @Lincolngdtalks

See you there!
