J’adore… Gene Federico

Gene Federico’s advert for Woman’s Day magazine is genius!

This advert was created in 1953… that’s 56 years ago! To achieve something like this is amazing really when you think about the level of technology available back then in comparison to now! Of course the age is clear, but the concept is so great; I love it! I think black and white makes it look classy?

I also found this parody, ‘intended to promote healthy lifestyles’ but I actually prefer the original. Just goes to show, modern isn’t necessarily better!

Very cool that you found the parody, or copy-cat concept. I remember my parents getting all hopped-up and angry when they’d see a contemporary riff on an idea that had “originally” been executed by one of the greats in the visual arts or visual communications, yet they were first to admit that there was nothing new under the sun! It was all about a fresh presentation, I guess.

Oh – Gene Federico was my father. Finding your post today was very sweet, as it’s Father’s Day! : )

Wow, thanks for commenting Gina! Yes, in this post-modernist age nothing is truely ‘original’ anymore, but it is definitely meant as a compliment to the source of inspiration. I love your father’s work – simple, classy and beautifully executed. I posted this nearly 3 years ago and it still remains one of my favourite pieces of Graphic Design!
